Stobart Rail responsible for slab track works

J. Murphy & Sons Limited (Murphy) has secured a multi-disciplinary design and construct contract worth more than £60 million that will see the electrification of the London Overground route from Gospel Oak to Barking.

The project to carry out principal enabling works for the overall scheme was awarded by Network Rail, working on behalf of Transport for London (TfL) and the Department for Transport (DfT).

Murphy will work on the track, including track lowering of plain line and switches, and the installation of slab track. Murphy will also reinforce embankments and cuttings, modify signals for 25kV AC electrification and telecommunication assets, and refurbish existing bridge parapets. Other work is to replace an existing over-bridge, reconstruct platforms at Walthamstow station and to install foundations for electrification masts along the line.

In securing the project, Murphy was able to demonstrate its approach to collaborative working by partnering with project designers, Amey, and specialist contractor, Stobart Rail, who will be responsible for the specialised slab track works.

The electrified route will also bring environmental benefits with the energy from the new trains offering a reduction in CO2 when compared to a diesel engine. There are also cost benefits, as electric trains are cheaper to operate maintain and fuel in comparison to diesel trains.
